Por Ta Hin Chang Shrine

Location: 10.849953, 99.231782

Por Ta Hin Chang Shrine is located on the Bangkok bound side of Highway 4 and is 48 Km from Chumphon town.
Legend has it that in the early 50's when they were constructing the Asia Highway, they found a stone that looked like an elephant. Not being that big they were surprised that even with heavy machinery they could not move the stone. So the Civil Engineer, who was a foreigner, whilst being skeptical agreed to ask the power of the sacred spirits to help. This worked whereby it was then possible to push the rock up the hill out of the way of the highway. To say thank you the local villagers built the Shrine to the sacred elephant stone. This is why you see all the elephant statues.
As cars drive pass they will honk their horns in a sign of respect. Those that stop to pay their respects will often light josh sticks and let of fire crackers.
Stopped off here on our first trip out in the new car.
We call the area "Banana Village" for on both sides of Highway 4 can be found a number of stalls selling, as you can guess bananas and products derived from bananas. You will only find the small type banana (Gluay Lep Muu Nang - Lady Finger Banana) sold here.
