Khao Nong Pla Caves
Location : 9.9817603, 99.0844339
Sadly we were told that this cave in currently closed so we could only view from outside. Certainly a future visit as its looks to be extensive and said to have water within.
The caves in Nong Pla Hill are best accessed from Nong Pla Monastery which is 70 Km south of Chumphon town. Take Highway 41 for 67km and turn left onto the small road just after the PTT station. At the end of this road turn right and then after 200 meters turn left. Follow this road, going straight over at a cross-roads. After the road goes over the railway the turning for the monastery in signposted on the left.
A track takes you through the palm plantation up to the monastery. The first cave is up on the side of the hill behind this prayer hall. There is this reclining Buddha at the entrance of the cave. The floor area of this cave is rather small but it extends some 50m vertically up into the hill, sort of like a lift shaft. Very colourful formations can be found. The second cave can be found by taking the made path. The entrance are to this cave has been made into a place of worship. This cave is a through cave and for the steep rise steel steps have been provided. In this cave we found a lot of fallen rock. At some time there must have been a big cave-in. But still some nice formations found. If you venture out through the other opening you come to the western side of the hill. This area is untouched and you find yourself in jungle. There is a path that will lead you round the cliff face to the largest cave we found here. Sadly we were told that this cave in currently closed so we could only view from outside. Certainly a future visit as its looks to be extensive and said to have water within.
